The traditional system of note taking, has always been the pen (or pencil) and paper. The internet, as with most things, is changing all that. For his lab Dalton took on the challenge of exploring different Information Gathering Tools. According to him one of the best tools for online note taking is called Evernote.
Like a classical notebook purchasable at your local store, Evernote can keep track of notes typed in by the user. However, Evernote, and others like it, has neat features that your paper notebook doesn't. For example, does your notebook come with a search feature? No? I didn't think so. How about web page clipping? No? Didn't think it did that either. See what I mean?
Web page clipping is a niffty feature that allows the user, after downloading the appropriate add-on, to clip whole web pages, or the URL, and store it on Evernote for future reference. This can be especially useful for one searching the internet for topics and not wanting to stop and read every single web page as it comes up. It also helps to keep the favorites folder for pages that you actually enjoy going to.
Actually the internet is not even necessary for using Evernote. Evernote is avaliable for downloading with nearly any operating system, and then the user can work off line. The potential problem here is that the user might change a note in one medium and then it would still be in the old form in the other medium. However, Evernote has cleverly overcome this problem with the 'sync' feature, which allows the user to synchronize information in both mediums to the latest, and most desirable version.
Evernote is additionally useful for group projects because it allows for collaboration on notes or presentations. Notes can be made available to other users, provided the have the link or other information for the note, and thus an entire group can collaborate on a project from long distances. Notes are also available for email or printing as a medium for sharing with others.
The key feature of Evernote, at least for me, is its availability. Evernote is availiable, both on and off-line as well as for private use or sharing. This amount of availability is relatively unique compared with former forms of spreading ideals, across the world. In former centuries in order for a high level amount of cooperation to occur one had to be relatively close to their peers. The first major change in availability of materials occurred with the miracle of the printing press which allowed printed materials to move as fast as the horse, boat or in later years train and airplane. Then our current miracle of the internet and the digital age came about and now materials move across the globe faster than we can process. And thus we come to amazing tools like Evernote, allowing nearly anything to happen.
