Writing in Engineering: Proposal

Since my last blog post I have interrupted my writing process with many mighty adventures which will hopefully fill a blog post soon to come. In the mean time my writing professor has instructed that I actually get around to writing this research paper. To this end I have written up the proposal for the project, and will be turning it in tomorrow. If you would like to view said paper I have put it online as Google Doc because the required format just doesn't fit into that of the post. I have put a brief outline here for those only mildly interested.

I. Introduction:
A.    Generally why writers use visuals
                                                           1.      Why engineers use them
B.     What are they in engineering
II.    Methods:
A.    In depth explanation of visuals in engineering
                                                           1.      Examples
                                                           2.      What information to display with them
B.     Context for visuals
                                                           1.      How to format the paper around them
                                                           2.      When information is best not given in  a visual
III. Results:
A.    When to use them
                                                           1.      When not to use them?
B.     How they are better at communicating an ides
                                                           1.      Examples?
IV. Analysis/Discussion
A.    Back to why we use them
                                                           1.      Of and relating to tufte

While it has been suggested that I look farther than Edward R. Tufte for information regarding the progress of data visualization and the modern world I have settled for subpar work on this paper. For those concerned, I feel that the time restraints I have for this paper, and the fact that engineering, family, and friends all come before this paper, I cannot attempt to write a paper specifically on the topic of data visualization to my satisfaction.

Here we come to the beauty of the internet. The end of the semester approaches and soon I will theoretically have infinitely more time for the research and writing of this paper/topic that has piqued my interest. In this case there won't be a grade to obtain, and fewer people care whether the research I find comes from a book in the Harold B. Lee, or a 12 time peer reviewed journal. The world will have to be satisfied with this level of effort from me, because despite appearances this thing called sleep is rather important to me.
